A Toast to Marguerite

Marguerite Hemery was a special friend of mine.  I met her more than 10 years ago when she and her sister, Virginia came to my office for a hearing evaluation.  She adapted quite well to her amplification because of her positive attitude and I got to see this spunky lady several times a year for rechecks.  I always was happy to see her and Virginia.  When she came for rechecks, we would not just talk about hearing and hearing aids, but had a mutual fondness for animals, specifically cats and dogs.  I felt a special kinship, almost as if she were my grandmother or aunt.

A couple of years ago there was a story about her in the Brownsville Herald.  She was "pumping iron" on a regular basis in a local health spa and the newspaper had a wonderful article and picture of her working out.  That story was framed and hung in our Harlingen office for the rest of our patients to see.  Not many days pass without someone commenting about it.  She was,  indeed, an inspiration to many.

Mrs. Henry passed away recently and I heard a story about her at her funeral and believe it to be true.  She had lived in the Rio Grande Valley since the 1930's and used to go to a restaurant in Matamoros called Dos Republicas.  She was friends with the owner and. as the story goes, his bartender composed a special drink for her.

She tasted it and said; "That's really wonderful!  What's it called?"  The bartender asked her what her name was and she said, "Marguerite."  He then said, "This drink then will be called 'Marguerita'."

 And so it goes.

I admire her and will miss her a lot.  It was a privilege being her friend.
