Schiphol Airport, Amsterdam, Netherlands

Flying to the USA or Canada from a UK regional airport via Amsterdam (Schiphol) can be very much more convenient than from Heathrow or Gatwick. The advantage of not having the long trip back home while in a jetlagged state after an overnight flight is very considerable.

After taking into consideration the cost of transport to and from Heathrow or Gatwick, plus a possible overnight stay near the airport, the Amsterdam option can even work out cheaper (check our Airline bargain page)

Amsterdam airport consists of a single terminal. Several long spurs radiate out from the central shopping area.

English is spoken almost universally in the Netherlands, and certainly by everyone at Schiphol and on KLM/NorthWest planes.

Most of the year the Netherlands is one hour ahead of UK times, but for a week or two in the spring and autumn the two countries are sometimes on the same time.

Prices in shops and restaurants are expensive.

When flying from the US to Europe you should not have too many problems, since most folks in most European countries speak at least somewhat english.
