Acadia passed into British hands in the 1700's, and in 1755 the British colonial authorities removed the Acadians to other British colonies. A major group were moved to the southern part of the present-day American state of Louisiana and their descendants are the Cajuns, a corruption of "Arcadians".
The present-day Cajun region of Louisiana is centred around the town of Lafayette.
