Tourist attractions and places worth visiting
There are a number of wide, low dams, each with an adjacent lock for the huge barges and other river traffic, located along most of the river's length, generally accessible from the Great River Road.
In each case there is an extensive free parking area.
Except for very rare special occasions, no tours of the Mississippi dams are possible (at least, at the dams we have visited) but in each case there is a viewing platform adjacent to the lock giving a good view, open to the public at no charge.
